Welcome to the 2018 edition of What to Read in the Rain, a collection of fiction, essays, poetry, songs and comics by famous Seattle writers and Bureau of Ideas’ surely soon-to-be famous students! Every year we invite adult writers from Seattle’s unparalleled writing community and student writers from our dazzling array of free classes and workshops songwriting, comics, poetry, fiction, and many others, taught by such creative forces of nature as Ben Gibbard and David Lasky—to contribute to an anthology unlike any other. This year’s theme is “growth” for two reasons—one, we normally release What to Read in the Rain in autumn, but this year, it will come out when everything is growing and blooming, because two, we’ve been busy opening a satellite tutoring center on Yesler Terrace! 2018’s What to Read in the Rain features work by students at our beloved original tutoring space (cleverly concealed behind our storefront, Greenwood Space Travel Supply) as well as by a few of our very first Yesler Terrace students, and fabulous adult writers like Robert Lashley, David Schmader, Tara Atkninson, Frances McCue, and Shin Yu Pai. Come to think of it, there’s a third reason our theme this year is “growth” –every copy of What to Read in the Rain sold goes to finance free tutoring and the free workshops that generate all the student work you’ll read here, and nurture another generation of excellent writers.
